The Nokia application ‘Phone Software Updater’ for which the icon/metaphor was created for, is a self-service application where user can manage to keep their handsets firmware up to date on a regular basis.

One of the most difficult challenges of creating new metaphors in the context of Nokia’s phone terminals and desktop application is the vast amount of existing icons/metaphors that are in use. Creating a metaphor includes considerations such as discoverability, learnability and distinctiveness in the context of where the icon/metaphor appears.

Background

The work during my employment in Nokia mainly included analysis and design of UI metaphors/icons used in S40 and S60 devices and desktop application. In addition some research into usability of metaphors in graphic user interfaces was also conducted and reported to internal teams in Nokia Design.
